Exploring 5 famous festivals in Halong

Halong Tours Festival has been organized since 1998 and already become a special tourist product. It comprises a series of cultural, sport and tourist acitivities which lures the large participation of local people, domestic and international visitors.

Cua Ong festival

Cua Ong Festival is annually held in Cua Ong Temple, Quang Ninh Province. It last from the second day of the firth lunar month to the end of the third lunar month of the year.

Cua Ong Temple is dedicated to Tran Quoc Tang, who was the 3rd son of Tran Hung Dao (lived in 13th century); and Tran Hung Dao’s brave generals, who had great success in fighting against the enemy. This is a historical relic built in Tran Dynasty and overlooking Bai Tu Long Bay. Joining the festivals, Halong bay tours tourists can take part in a great ceremony to memorize famous generals of Vietnam. Quan Lan festival

Quan Lan Festival is celebrated at Dinh Wharf on Quan Lan Island, Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province. The festival lasts ten days, from the 10th day to the 20th day of the sixth lunar month. Quan Lan Festival is an annual festival of the locals on Quan Lan Island to memorize the historic victory against Mongol invaders in the 13th century and pray for a good fishing season in the year.

On the 10th day of the sixth lunar month, an order of “closing the village” is announced. According to the order, all villagers are not allowed to leave the village but visitors are welcomed to the island and join the festival. On the 13th day of the same month, villagers are divided into two groups to practice and prepare for a traditional rowing competition. The competition is held on the 18th day, after a solemn ceremony at the Quan Lan Communal House built in the 18th century – one of the oldest communal houses of Vietnam.

Quan Lan Festival is a highlight in village tradition of local residents on Quan Lan Island. It expresses a strong spirit of Vietnamese against foreign invaders.

Tra Co festival

Tra Co Festival takes place yearly in Tra Co Communal House in Mong Cai Town, Quang Ninh Province. The festival is held in a week, from the 30th day of the fifth lunar month to the 6th day of the sixth lunar month.

Tra Co Communal House was built in 1511 with unique architectural style of the later Le Dynasty. The structure was dedicated to tutelary genies of the village. It’s a historical relic that is typical for village culture of Vietnam in feudal period. The communal house is now in well-condition. Tra Co Festival is an occasion to memorize tutelary genies of the village and wish the best for the village.

At the beginning of Tra Co Festival is the ritual procession. After the procession, there are many fun activities for entertainment such as the fattest pig competition, cooking contest and dance. In the fattest pig competition, who own the fattest pig will won the first prize. The pigs joining the competition are called “Ong Voi” (Mr. Elephant). This traditional competition aims at encouraging breeding and agriculture. Besides, there is a cooking contest with the attendance of talented cooks in the village. Finally, the festival ends with a traditional dance which prays for peace and wealth to the village.

Yen Tu festival

Yen Tu Festival is held at Yen Tu Mountain, Uong Bi Town, Quang Ninh Province. The festival is from the 10th day of the first lunar month to the end of the third lunar month.

Yearly, thousands of Halong bay tours visitors come to Yen Tu after Lunar New Year Festival to pray for lucks and health to themselves and their family in the New Year. They believe that if they can climb to the top of Yen Tu Mountain (Dong Pagoda), they will receive more good things in that year. Bach Dang festival

Bach Dang Festival is a traditional festival held yearly on the eighth day of the forth lunar month. The festival takes place in Tran Hung Dao Temple and Vua Ba Temple (Female King Temple) in Yen Hung District, Quang Ninh Province.

The festival is featured with a procession along the river’s bank and boat race on Bach Dang River. Besides, there are many traditional games such as wrestling, human chess playing, and cock-fighting.

Bach Dang Festival attracts thousands of Halong bay tours visitors coming each year. At the festival, tourists will feel a bustling and holy ambiance of the ancient battle on the river and tradition against foreign invaders of Vietnamese people.
